Late 19th Century to Early 20th Century in Quilts

Joy Neal of Mt. Vernon and LaConner presented our May 20 program, Turn of the Century Quilts, 1870-1912.  Joy's presentation, illustrated with slides, covered what was happening in the world during this period as well that influenced quilt style, colors, and fabrics.  She concluded with a trunk show of real life examples from her collection of tops, quilts, and fabric so that we could touch and examine closely.

Joy says, "I don't claim to be the last word on that time frame, but it is where my interest and collection seemed to focus."  Those of us who have heard Joy's comments and explanations at WQSG meetings know she has a great deal of knowledge about the evolution of late 19th and early 20th century quilting.

Other quilts and fabrics brought for Show & Tell. This one and a great variety of stripes circa 1950s.

We all more or less agreed that we wouldn't have used the alt blocks' fabric that maker chose in the following quilt. Yet it was a great fabric in and of itself.

The following two blocks seemed about a decade older than the others in this top.
